Living Legacy Launched!

Some 70 friends, and friends-of-friends, gathered for the February 9 launch event, at the historic and art-filled Shaughnessy home of art patron, philanthropist, and friend, Roberta Lando Beiser. The theme of the evening was sharing stories, which included some very poignant photos and tributes brought by guests of their loved ones.

In keeping with the nostalgic mood, Clyde Harvey, the well-known Vancouver pianist, entertained us with old standards at the grand piano. My daughter Micaela and her boyfriend, Michael, did a great job as the official greeters, as did Micaela’s old high school friends (and now successful young professionals) Carrie, Brittany and Kana who volunteered to serve up the scrumptious eats prepared by Kiss Catering.  Another friend, Claudia, provided the superb bartending. Thank you all!

As the evening wound down, globe-trotting couple and jazz stylists, Jamie Ann Mauro and Erik Kalaidzis, joined Clyde at the piano for a delectable and impromptu jam session–including a round of  Happy Birthday to Colleen Fenn, with whom we were honoured to celebrate a milestone birthday!

For me, the most rewarding aspect of the evening were comments by several guests about how many new people they had met and shared stories with, stories about the people who had most inspired them–grandparents, siblings, friends, even a piano teacher.  I hope that telling their stories inspired people to write them down, or to consider documenting them in some way. What, after all, is more meaningful– or more fragile– than the story of the lives that shaped our own?

Check out the photos of the event, taken by reality tv producer and amateur photographer, Jan Coleman . Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to get around to everybody. But we know who you are!
